Beer Review: James River Brewing Midnight Mistress

At MyJoog.com, we like beer and we like live music. And these two peacefully reside at James River Brewing, located in downtown Scottsville Virginia. The brewery brews a plethora of beers including the Midnight Mistress, a cask like stout brewed with cacao bits and paprika. When I say cask feel, I mean low CO2 which enhances the flavor.  The mid-palette is almost chewy and the finish is slightly spicy from the pepper. Screams for a juicy hamburger.  You can enjoy the Midnight Mistress and their remaining portfolio in the Beer Garden accompanied by live music on weekends. And check out their July Fourth Celebration featuring Chamomile & Whiskey.  Now that's a good call.

Album Review: Jann Klose - Mosaic

For a few years now we've been following the career of German born Jann Klose, primarily because he's one of the few contemporary pop artists I enjoy.  First, he doesn't just strum and croon; but plays a solid guitar and sings interesting original songs. The first track of his latest CD, Mosaic, showcases this talent. Make it Better is an optimistic take on the future - with an upbeat rhythm. On and On showcases his vocal range (as does the a cappella Song of the Siren) and Still is perhaps the one track that will remain on your iPod months from now. My favorite - or maybe its The Kite. His backing band also makes this CD worth listening - The Edukators (Chris Marolf, Rob Mitzner,Patrick Carmichael, & Lars Potteiger) can play. And is that some bluegrass in Beautiful One. Nice....

CD Review: Phoebe Hunt Live at the Cactus Cafe

For the past couple weeks, I've been listening relentlessly to Phoebe Hunt's Live at the Cactus Cafe. I've been following Ms. Hunt since her days with The Belleville Outfit so I leaped at the chance to hear a preview version of her live CD.  Why, first - I love her voice - sultry and sweet. And her fiddle. And the range of her musical influences. There's blues, gypsy jazz, old time jazz, western swing, country. You name it, it seems like she can sing it - authentically. This release is a little pop-ish then what I'm normally accustomed to, but paired with her pal, Reed Turner, hits home - as in Take Me Home. Hunt also covers former band mate Connor Forsyth in Before I'm Done - with Forsyth on the keyboards - that shows the range of her vocals. Very nice.  As is Walk Away - my favorite track.  This CD is also economical - 16 songs in total - with Turner leading with guitar plus his I Got Love. Still listen to Turner's Ghosts in the Attic on a regular basis and I think Live at the Cactus Cafe will join it in the rotation. Cheers.
