Joshua Tree Music Festival

Although we will not be able to attend, the lineup for this year's Joshua Tree Music Festival looks very interesting.
stanton warriors (saturday)
(UK) Monster dance floor technicians; one of the most popular & distinctive dance DJ, production and remix outfits in the world - Mark Yardley & Dominic B - the Stanton Warriors. Dig em live under the stars in the magical mojave in May ! The Warriors have succeeded in not only bucking musical definition but have picked it up by the collar and kicked it's ass out of the music world. With their eclectic past and drawing on some traditional sounds of underground house, hip hop, electro and funk, they've mixed up the old and the new and come out with something bigger than the sum of its parts, namely the Stanton sound! Not many can claim to have defined a 'sound', but Yardley and Dominic B should definitely be there if there's ever a ruck on the subject. The Stanton Warriors have carefully honed a distinct sound that carves up dance floors through 4 corners of the world sounding fresh and bringing something new to the party. As Dom said at the start of it all when he first saw the reaction to one of their tracks at the Notting Hill Carnival 'Everybody was dancing'. We're a few years down the line but it's still about 'everybody' and 'dancing' - there's just more people at the party! Check out the Good Vibrations Video
mexican institute of sound (live band) (friday)
(MEXICO) “The sound of old Mexican cumbias, boleros and mariachi tunes scrambled with samples, effects and beats, from lounge music to funk to low-budget beat boxes.” - NEW YORK TIMES “Camilo Lara works the electro-dance scene like the James Murphy [LCD Soundsystem] of Latin America. Think Hot Chip visiting the Buena Vista Social Club; think traditional samples with bells and beats; think a sweaty indie-dance party below the bustling streets of one of the world’s most populous cities.” - CMJ Mexican Institute of Sound’s (M.I.S.) third album ‘Soy Sauce’ was released by Nacional Records in USA/Canada, El Volcan Music in Spain, MiCo in Mexico and Cooking Vinyl everywhere else this past Spring 2009. The album traverses Lara’s wild musical imagination with a witty sense of humor for good effect... whether it’s converting the traditional sounds of cumbia to a full-on electronic dance track, paying tribute to hip hop luminaries De La Soul or N.W.A. with Mexican sonidos or singing a love song as if Serge Gainsbourg had spent time in the Mayan jungle.
fort knox five (live band) (saturday)
(DC) - A major force on the international funk and breaks scene. Having released and arsenal of knee knockin floor rockin singles & remixes, Fort Knox Five have the midas touch for producing heavy hitting singles. midnite (saturday)
(ST. CROIX) Time is not counted from daylight but from midnite. Trance induding naked and raw is an apt description for Midnite's musical style, in which they forgo the frills of extensive remixes, overdubbing and other musical refinements. Hailing from the Island of St Croix, Midnite is one of the preeminent roots reggae bands of the millennium. Vanguards of conscious reggae who represent the King's and Queen's music to the fullness of Jah. Midnite's profound and innovative lyrics are sincere and deeply rooted to present the other half of the story. Midnite explodes in live performances with sets that often exceed 3 hours. Their vigorous, weighty sound, driven by the punchy bass lines creates a vibe that penetrates straight to the heart. These epic musical communions have earned Midnite an enormous following throughout the roots community. Dig them live at sunset in the magical Mojave !
gaudi (friday)
(UK) An international favorite on the electro-dance scene, italian born singer, musician & composer comes to Joshua Tree fresh from the studio with solo album #12 (No Prisoners on Six Degrees Records). His previous release (Dub Qawwali) was #2 on iTunes chart (usa) & the #1 selling electronic album on Amazon. Gaudi's live performances are innovative and unconventional: He is more 'oneman band for the 21st century' than DJ and has adopted the decks into hisset as another instrument in his 'kit bag' - alongside his Moog, Theremin, Megaphone, Tape delay, Dub siren, Stylophone, multi-effect boxes, live dubbed vocals, Melodica and a myriad other percussive and sonic gadgets! His is a unique approach that connects w/ audiences, a signature style of 'Dub n Breakz' that is a bass-driven, dance floor filling mix of irresistible grooves, floor shaking bass, and technological wizardry to engage the body and the senses. Fat tunes ranging from serious electronic to roots reggae and beyond.
bonerama (saturday)
(New Orleans) - Kickin' brass and takin' names. Even in a city that doesn’t play by the rules, New Orleans’ Bonerama is something different. They can evoke vintage funk, classic rock and free improvisation in the same set; maybe even the same song. Bonerama has been repeatedly recognized by Rolling Stone, hailed as “the ultimate in brass balls” (2005) and praised for their “…crushing ensemble riffing, human-feedback shrieks and wah-wah growls” (2007). Bonerama carries the brass-band concept to places unknown; what other brass band could snag an honor for “Best Rock Band” (Big Easy Awards 2007)? As cofounder Mark Mullins puts it, “We thought we could expand what a New Orleans brass band could do. Bands like Dirty Dozen started the “anything goes” concept, bringing in the guitars and the drum kit and using the sousaphone like a bass guitar. We thought we could push things a little further.”
delhi 2 dublin (sunday)
(CANADA) Delhi 2 Dublin is a group of five musicians who mashup electronica with world music, keeping it heavy on the Bhangra and Celtic flavours. Their unique style of live electronica is the ultimate transcultural music experience. It is the sound for today’s Globalista. Their foot stomping, high energy live set has won them rabid fans at Bumbershoot, Shambala, High Sierra, Earthdance and Vancouver music festivals. Their diligent touring ethic and their quest to take over the world one dance floor at a time has led to a cult following with their heavy metal Sitar vs. Fiddle dance off duels ! orgone (friday)
(LA) - orgone (ôr'g_n) n. A universal life force, a cosmic unit of energy, the creative force in nature. “Nasty, distorted, finger-popping, ass waggling old-school funk goes head to head with the gloss of L.A.'s Tower of Power styled horn charts “ All Music. "Orgone recalls acts like Fela Kuti, Trouble Funk, and War, but with a heavy dose of disco, where the deep groove and diva vocals are so authentic, they could be samples." The Onion. “ Big slabs of grizzled R&B, greasy as fatback and thick as a very particular kind of smoke. They recall the majesty of Sly & the Family Stone, and there's a riot goin' on!” eMusic. Modernized Parliament - Meters old school funkatized with gritty chicano style riffs & afro funk !

"Pregnant with explosive ideas and genre smashing sonics, the music of_Haale Gafori and partner in crime percussionist-producer Matt Kilmer_engages faith, politics and love in refreshing ways that understand_that lovely and terrible things coexist. locura (saturday)
(SF) LoCuras music is strongly rooted in Flamenco, deepened through their time living in southern Spain and traveling in Morocco. But it is in the way they move in and out of other musical styles, like Reggae, Cuban Son, and Hip-Hop that results in an irresistible desire to move and to be moved. In Spain the expression "Ida y Vuelta" is used to describe certain styles within Flamenco that made a "round-trip" from Spain to Latin America, mixing with music from the African slave and Indigenous populations. With this idea of music traveling and music as creative resistance, LoCura takes the trip back again mixing it up with their own Califas Flamenkito, Reggae, and Cuban Son styles. As the name implies, LoCura taps into the maelstrom of daily experiences to find that point where opposites meet and dance to convey the way different musical traditions can move so fluidly together. Moved by the music that crosses borders and takes root in different lands, LoCura draws from this creative 'rebelde' spirit to cultivate the cures passed on from our ancestors. Dance music that uplifts the spirit and provides food for the soul- a sound track to feeling alive! VIDEO

Jill King - Rain on Fire

We've been receiving several CDs lately from female artists and Rain on Fire by Jill King was one of these and a nice surprise as well. This is her third CD, but the first for us; all originals, part bluesy, part country, even a little hip hop to fight tradition. I really liked the first track, Beautiful World, but it was the second track, California, that caught my attention. Beautiful World is a cleverly written love song (there’s nothing in this beautiful world worth fighting you for), but California is an alt-country tune that sticks. I listened several times - reminded me of a female Dave Alvin. Maybe its the subject matter. I’ll Keep Loving You is a beautifully sung inspiration - listen to that voice. She probably needed the inspiration since while writing the lyrics for this CD she lost Bruce Holloway, one of her co-writers, and also, Miss Glenda, her "second" mother.

What made the rest of the CD enjoyable is that each song is different. Rain On Fire focuses on funky vocals, 16 Elephants is a tent revival of guitar and strings, God My Father is a bit jazzy and gospel-ish, and Undertow would make a good reprise in a modern day Body Heat. Then there's Mark on Me, which includes commentary by Steven Johnson, grandson of Robert Johnson, sections of “Crossroad Blues”, and a rap by V. Mayz. Not sure of the rap, though. The CD changes pace with a Latin sound in Taking Me Back and this is easily my favorite track. Love the accordion. The CD goes on, All I Want, Something Worth Stealing, Black Rose, and Didn't You Know. I enjoyed this CD even more after every listen, give it a listen.

Red Molly @ Jammin' Java

A couple years ago we heard an amazing assembly of harmonies on satellite radio which made me quickly set Red Molly as a MyJoog favorite. In fact, Red Molly is best known for their tight harmonies and was the primary reason the trio has bonded so tightly. And we made sure we listened to their 2008 release, Love and Other Tragedies, as often as possible. Yet this week was our first opportunity to see the trio perform live - at our neighborhood music venue Jammin' Java. The band is touring in support of their latest CD, James, and yes, their harmonies are still awesome. But I was also impressed with their overall sound and choice of instruments. Abbie Gardner may be the first female dobro player I've seen and Carolann Solebello plays a mean bass guitar. With Laurie MacAllister on a couple different acoustic guitars, they have a great sound - both the harmonies and the music. This evening the group started with a Darrell Scott cover, Harlan, followed by an original Honey on My Grave that includes a long dobro solo. They returned to a few more covers, Lonesome Tonight, Gillian Welch's Caleb Meyer, Len Miles' Black Flowers and Randy Weeks' Can't Let Go. Each song was excellent - I was impressed with the arrangements - they are really good musicians. But they stated their second set with their strength, an A Capella number. Wow. Then several originals including Jezebel, The Mind of a Soldier, Tear My Still House Down. Then some Steve Goodman. Their encore - another A Capella. Can't wait for Merlefest.

CD Reviews: The Drive By Truckers & the Ten Foot Polecats

The Drive By Truckers
I first heard the The Drive By Truckers at the 2003 Austin City Limits Music Festival and I was instantly hooked - this was a rock n' roll band that I've been waiting years for. Three guitars blasting away and lyrics based on a similar teen experience. Seems like boys growing up in Alabama did much the same as boys in Maryland. That year also marked the release of Decoration Day - which even today is one of my favorite CDs. The following year they released The Dirty South, another fine effort. But to appreciate the band, you have to witness a live performance. Three and a half hours of pure entertainment. Within a two year period, I was able to see them multiple times live. Fast forward to March 2010. In the intervening years, Jason Isbell left to start his own band, his ex-wife Shonna Tucker joined as a bassist, Cooley and Hood started families, and the band released a couple average CDs - as compared to Decoration Day & The Dirty South. The band is still spending a majority of their life on the road and recreating the four guitar sound with John Neff; but are they becoming stale? No, not at all. Particularly with the soon to be released Big To-Do, their best CD in five plus years ....

This CD includes standard DBT characteristics that made their earliest efforts a success; Patterson Hood's ability to craft an engaging story. In the past he has informed listeners of Alabama or south Tennessee history, in particular the music recording in Muscle Shoals with The Swampers - in which his Father was a member. With the Big To-Do, he continues to take contemporary stories and make them into old-time songs. Some are historical; some are political. That old time feel is created not only from the lyrics, but also Hood's raw vocals and southern twang. Add in guitar solos or interplay and you get the standard DBT sound. Love it. Daddy Learned To Fly, The Fourth Night of My Drinking, Drag the Lake Charlie, The Wig He Made Her Wear, or After the Scene Dies - all done in this style. In contrast, The Flying Wallendas is arranged like a waltz and contains a softer, sadder sound with Neff's pedal steel. And then there's his Sante Fe, another typical DBT track; good harmonies and includes a little Cooley rhythm.

In fact, Cooley's songs are usually my favorites - something about his rhythmic delivery and I liked all three. I was expecting more songs concerning his fatherhood, and there is one, Eyes Like Glue. This song is similar to Outfit, with a father explaining things to his son: "...you will have a big ol' brain, you won't need it; but you will try to use it just the same". This song continues a trend were their most powerful songs are the slower ones. I can also relate to Get Downtown in its bluesy take on unemployment blues; it also accurately describes the computer industry: "foreigners working for less". And Birthday Boy is standard Cooley - completely rhythmic and almost hypnotic in its delivery.

The biggest surprise is the contributions from Shonna Tucker. She is no longer merely a bassist and penned two songs. Accolades to Hood for including them. Initially its quite a surprise to hear the female vocals - but its a nice change. The band shows they can slow down to a ballad - and still be powerful. You Got Another is a great song. Possibly my favorite on the CD. (It's Gonna Be) I Told You So is way more upbeat, almost a popish Pat Benatar in its delivery. Not your standard DBT tune, but like a muscadine wine, you like, but not sure why.

The Big To-Do is well worth a listen; I believe their best effort in half a decade. I am also looking forward to the DBT tour in support of the CD. Hood will probably include more information on the background of the songs (than what is available in the liner notes) and there will most likely be more guitar action. The band is also touring with Tom Petty during the summer, so see them earlier for a more affordable show.

Ten Foot Polecats
Recently we received the inaugural release from the Ten Foot Polecats, "I Get Blamed For Everything I Do". Now, we've been following this New England based band ever since hearing a few of their songs from myspace. Their sound is raw, hard drivin' blues which they refer to as Punk Blues with "their deep roots drawn from the North Mississippi Hill Country". It's a simple arrangement, Jay Scheffler on vocals and harmonica, Jim Chilson on guitar, and Dave Darling on drums; but their music is powerful - reminds me of early The Nighthawks. The CD starts with this raw power in Chicken Head Man, and then oscillates between this drivin' sound and slower tempos. So Good To Me is an example of this slowdown, and my favorite track is a slower alt-country flavor in Couple More Miles. This song shows that the band has depth. What also makes this a good listen is that at times there's plenty of harp, as in Scratch Ticket, but then plenty of guitar as in Bar Hoppin'. And Big Road has a Crossroads Blues feel.

"I Get Blamed For Everything I Do" was a pleasant surprise - a surprise in that we didn't know what to expect. Its just not hard-drivin' blues where the songs are indistinguishable. There's plenty of diversity between tracks. 2010 is also an important year for the band. Not only are they releasing the CD, but they just signed with Hillgrass Bluebilly Records, an Austin based outfit that is known for finding hidden talent.

Within their first two years, the Ten Foot Polecats have become major players in the New England blues circuit. This spring they have opportunities to expand their audience through the 2010 Muddy Roots Festival and shows scheduled in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. We hope to include several in our travels.

Steep Canyon Rangers Prepare for Second Tour with Steve Martin

Here is a press release we are passing along to our readers:

Once again Steve Martin has tapped the award-winning bluegrass group the Steep Canyon Rangers to tour with him in support of his Grammy®-winning Rounder Records release, The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo. The Banjo Tour will begin on April 19th in Detroit and is expected to continue into October, with performances scheduled at the New Orleans JazzFest, MerleFest and Bonnaroo.

“I am very excited to begin my banjo tour with the Steep Canyon Rangers,” commented Martin. “It has been a long time dream of mine to travel around the country with a bunch of guys.”

Woody Platt of the Steep Canyon Rangers commented, “We had an incredible time touring with Steve in the fall. He’s a consummate professional who thrills the crowd every night and is so gracious about introducing us and our music to new audiences.”

For their part, the Rangers also earned rave reviews while on tour with Martin in the fall, during which they had an opportunity to perform songs from their fourth studio album for Rebel Records, Deep in the Shade. The tour included performances at the 20th Annual International Bluegrass Music Awards Show, the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, Carnegie Hall, the Ryman Auditorium, Royal Festival Hall in London, and other venues in cities including Los Angeles, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, Charlotte, Washington, Toronto, Chicago, Denver and Santa Fe. The Rangers also performed with Martin on The Late Show with David Letterman, The View, NPR’s World Café, and the BBC’s Later . . . with Jools Holland.

“When Martin graciously left the stage to the group for several songs, the Rangers went into overdrive, mixing dazzling speed with high lonesome harmonies. Nicky Sanders’ blazing fiddle playing repeatedly stole the show, especially during an encore rendition of the bluegrass standard ‘Orange Blossom Special.’”

The Chicago Tribune

“absolutely smoking . . . the musical highlight was the Steep Canyon Rangers’ ‘Lovin’ Pretty Women,’ a stomping barnburner.”

The Boston Herald

Deep in the Shade, released in October 2009, was in the top 10 on the Billboard Bluegrass Albums chart for the month of October, attaining the band's highest Billboard chart position at #3. It was #2 on WNCW's top 50 CD's of 2009, #7 on Country Standard Time's list of the top 30 CD's of 2009, and top 10 on PopMatters' Best Bluegrass of 2009 list. Deep in the Shade was the #1 CD for the month of December in Bluegrass Music Profiles.

“The Mountain’s Gonna Sing” from Deep in the Shade was included in NPR Music’s Best of 2009 series, in the Folk Alley top 10.

Ace of Cakes

While covering the 2010 South Beach Wine & Food Festival for Wine-compass.com we ditched the 2010 Everglades Bluegrass Festival because of rain. However, we do have some interesting news to report while talking to members of the Food Network's Ace of Cakes Geoff Manthorn and Chef Duff. Besides being bakers, they are both aspiring musicians and frequent several of the north Baltimore music venues such as the Ottobar. Geoff prefers folk and bluegrass and you can check out his acoustic work via his myspace page.

Chef Duff likes a more harder sound and is a member of Soihadto - a cross between Pink Floyd and Radiohead, without the vocals. Yes, just music; interesting.... They have a show scheduled for March 13th at McGrady's Irish Pub - Charlottesville, VA in which we will make an effort to attend. We also asked Chef Duff who he's currently listening to and he introduced us to A Night in the Box, a trioka from Minneapolis who play "Americana-infused soul and bluegrass". Right up our alley. In return we suggested he see The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band's show at The 8X10 on March 18th. We hope to see the entire crew there.
