Album Review: Woody Pines Upcoming Self Titled Release
If you are a fan of Old Crow or Pokey LaFarge, Woody Pines upcoming self titled album on Nashville’s Muddy Roots Records label should be your thing. In fact, Woody Pines and Gill Landry toured together previously as a jugband. The album combines that sound with a little country blues and rootsy country to create one special release. Pines is augmented by Skip Frontz Jr on bass and Brad Tucker on electric guitar, with the album produced by Grammy-winner Mitch Dane
and mixed by Vance Powell. Two tracks you must seek out are Little Stella Blue and Make It To The Woods; one soft, the other rough and bluesy - but both excellent songs. Delta Bound is another great blues song; Walking Stick and Black Rag Swing will be festival favorites. The album is due out May 28th and pair with the several breweries where the band is performing this summer: Triumph Brewing Company, Bearwaters Brewery, and Marietta Brewing Company. Cheers.

Album Review: Ryan Culwell - Flatlands
Before last week Ryan Culwell was completely off my radar; but after listening to Flatlands, he's won a new fan. Culwell is now based out of Nashville, but the album's all about his boyhood roots in the Texas panhandle. These are serious songs; some ballads, some rootsy, others almost folkish - but all play through the heart. Just listen to the last track Horses. For me, that's what makes the album; no two songs are similar - yet all are powerful. Listen to the anguish in Red River or the personal journey in the title track. Piss Down In My Bones is a favorite track with it's staccato rap as is Won't Come Home
(a slow ballad). Pair with the opening track Amarillo's hometown brewery, Big Texan Brewery. Cheers.

25 years with Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys - What A Dream It’s Been
Can't believe Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys have been performing for 25 years, but it's true. And to celebrate their Silver anniversary they released What A Dream It’s Been, an all acoustic, newly re-arranged, sample of their favorite releases. Thus fans will hear some of their favorite roots, swing, rockabilly, and traditional country music - for me, Parts Unknown is the one. However, the entire collection is a winner; love the acoustic picking in Nothing to Lose and This Ain't a Good Time, the duet in the title track, the country tone in Glad When I'm Gone, and of course the tardy wisdom in If I Knew Now (What I Knew Then). Pair with Southern California's Stone Brewing Company. Cheers.

Album Review: Greg Trooper - Incident On Willow Street
Recently I was sent the SoundCloud link for Greg Trooper's Incident On Willow Street and it's been making me wonder why I hadn't been following this singer songwriter earlier. There's nothing to really fault about this release. The songwriting makes you pay attention to learn how his distraught or luckless characters fare in the end; there's no laid back mindless listening here. The musicianship is first rate (check out Good Luck Heart) and why not with multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell on hand. Sadly, makes me miss Levon Helm even more. Also appearing on the album are Kenneth
Blevins, Texan Jack Saunders, Oli Rockberger, and harmony vocals from Lucy Wainwright Roche. Not bad. Other favorites are Steel Deck Bridge and One Honest Man. Pair with Trooper's hometown brew: Brooklyn Brewery.

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 13, 2014) – Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band is happy to announce The Big Damn Roots Revolution Tour, which will take the band throughout the U.S. this winter and spring.
With a reputation for their incendiary live shows, it seemed only natural for the Big Damn Band to hit the road again in support of Between the Ditches, their latest album. But this time, The Rev, Breezy & Ben will unleash their ferocious roots/blues explosion to the masses alongside some of their favorite artists for what is sure to be an unforgettably evening of roots music. Conceptualized by none other than the Reverend Peyton himself, The Big Damn Roots Revolution Tour is a musical event that will showcase today’s top roots artists in a whole new light.
Between the Ditches has been received with enthusiasm since its debut at #1 on the iTunes Blues chart week of release. They’ve received critical raves in the US and internationally, video play from CMT and MTVu, charting at both college and Americana radio and inclusion in the hit Showtime series Shameless starring William H. Macy.
Roaring out of the southern Indiana foothills, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band plays a brand of Americana and Blues that stands alone - Delta blues and hillbilly fervor combine with musical acuity sharp as razor wire. Their new album Between The Ditches is a chronicle of this lifestyle. Since it arrived in August, excellent reviews have appeared in publications like Vintage Guitar, Classic Rock Magazine, Alternative Press and Living Blues. Their fifth album celebrates the growl of a good truck engine, the fiercest passion for their country home and the importance of family.

Merlefest 25 - Lineup and Tickets Now Available
Ticket sales for MerleFest 25, presented by Lowe’s and slated for April 26 – 29, 2012, will begin on Tuesday, November 8, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Ticket purchases can be made on the web at www.merlefest.org or by calling 1-800-343-7857. The four-day festival will once again take place on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. MerleFest is an annual homecoming of musicians and music fans, gathering to celebrate the memory of musician Eddy Merle Watson, beloved son of American music icon Doc Watson.
The initial lineup reflects the diversity and quality of performers that have become the hallmark of the four-day festival. MerleFest is known for its unique mix of traditional, roots-oriented music from the Appalachian region, including bluegrass and old-time music, and expanded to include Americana, blues, country, Celtic, Cajun, cowboy, zydeco, rock and many other styles that Doc Watson has referred to as “traditional plus.”
“This year’s initial lineup will bring back a little nostalgia for the core MerleFest audience, those fans who return year after year to hear the traditional sounds of roots music. We have some of the leading names in the music industry, of today and yesteryear, lined up to perform at the historic 25th festival,” says Ted Hagaman, director of the festival. “The MerleFest 25 lineup is made up of many of the artists who have helped make this festival the premier, internationally-recognized event that it has become. And, we are thrilled to welcome back that core fan base that has been with us for the ride all along… and welcome a whole new generation of fans to experience the music, moments and memories that make MerleFest so special.”
The following artists will join host Doc Watson at MerleFest 25:

Jackie Bristow - Freedom

Ms. Bristow took time from her current tour with master guitarist Tommy Emmanuel to answer a few questions.
1) By naming the CD and the title track "Freedom" - is that a metaphor for personal experience?

2) One of my favorite tracks is "Broken Girl". And with "Running", "Hightail it Outta Here", "Holy Mess", "Warning Signs" - there's a theme developing - am I correct?
IF there is a theme developing,, I not sure I planned that.. Hightail it outta here is actually an OLD song, I wrote about 10 years ago with an old school friend... Holy Mess is a song written about a family i know from my hometown in NZ.. Running is a song about running from your roots..it is bitter sweet.. running but holding onto the small town values and dreams. Warning signs, and Broken Girl are stories of heartache and quite difficult times.
3) How does this CD differ from your previous 2 releases?
This album I really wanted to have a more fun, we recorded the album very quickly.. some of the songs are more rocky.... I think there is a more a folk/rock/alt country vibe in this album.. the other albums were focused at radio and pop.. I wanted to make an album that rocked and was not over produced....so we tried to keep it simple. there are still a few ballads as I still love acoustic ballads...but over all it is a more rockn' album than my first two albums.
4) I understand Aotearoa refers to New Zealand. Tell us how this song relates to your home land?
Aotearoa - is the Native word of "The land of the long white cloud" New Zealand. I really wanted to write a song about my homeland.. and I had tried for many years.. finally after spending time back home before returning to LA where i wrote this song.. After returning home I realized how much I have missed my homeland, missed the countryside, the scenery.. and my own people.. I have traveled for many years and it sneaks up on you.... I wrote the song about the area in NZ where I am from... the deep south of NZ... Talked about the hokouni hills and the lake wakatipu.. some personal special places to me.. at the end of the song there is a maori chant.. and he is calling me back home.. say return return, you are always welcome here.. your ancestor lie here and this is always your home!
5) When coming to the States, why did you select Austin?
I lived in LA for 3 years.. I had visited LA a lot before moving to there.. but living there was not the same and visiting.. I had been to Austin about 6 times over the years for SXSW and touring etc and I always had the sweetest time, I always felt inspired.. so I got this crazy idea to move.. .and as it turned out it wasn't so crazy,, I was brave I think as I moved on my own not knowing to many people but I was made to feel welcome and I just loved my time there.. I am moving back this year after jumping through a couple of hoops to get a new visa.. I thought of living in Nashville but I just don't feel connected to that city.. NCY is just to big for me.. I'm not up for that.. Austin there is culture, great music, great food, sweet people.. musical community.. and a lot of soul... I want to live where I can be inspired to make music and day dream and develop as an artist and Austin allows me to do that!
6) Any favorite Austin-based musicians or local music venues?
Oh I love Gary Clark Jr, Noelle Hampton, Ephraim Owens, Charlie Sexton, Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin, Billy Harvey, and Jimmie Lafave. And there are so many wonderful musicians in this town., to name a few, Dony Wynn, JJ Johnson, George Reiff, Chris Maresh, Chip Dolan, warren hood... . I love going to Tcs on Mondays night, and see Mark Hays and his band.. I love the Gallery.. and the Continental Club.. and momos is a great venue.. , one world theatre.. there are so many places its hard to name them all.
7) Besides the Australian connection, how did you get connected with Tommy Emmanuel and how has the tour been to this point? Any favorite shows?
The reason I landed this awesome tour was Tommy was touring through Austin 2008 with a good friend of mine opening for him.. Rick Price.. Rick had his own gig at the Cactus Cafe and Tommy was sitting in with him.. Rick invited me to sing a song so I sat in with Tommy and Rick,, then Tommy invited me to perform at his show at the one world theatre.. so I sat in on a song.. I was then invited to join Tommy on his tour for 2011.. This tour would have to be one of the most amazing times of my life.. when I moved to the states.. my dream was to play theaters and here I am singing my songs and selling my cds.. its a great feeling!
